Supporting Structured Browsing for Full-Text Scientific Research Reports
نویسنده
چکیده
Scientific research is highly structured and some of that structure is reflected in research reports. Traditional scientific research reports are yielding to interactive documents which expose their internal structure and are richly linked to other materials. In these changes, there are opportunities to take advantage of the structure in scientific research reports which previously have not been systematically captured. Thus, we explore ways of capturing more of the structure of research in reports about the research and we use that structure to support the development of a new generation of document browsers which include novel interaction widgets. We apply the browsers incorporating the conceptual modeling framework to full-text research reports from the Public Library of Science (PLoS). In addition, we describe the application of modeloriented constructs to facilitating highly interlinked digital libraries.

Rich Semantic Models and Knowledgebases for Highly-Structured Scientific Communication
Rather than using text for scientific research reports, we have proposed developing highly-structured reports with rich semantic models. In this paper, we consider detailed structures for the components of research reports using a modeling framework based on a rigorous upper ontology. For instance, we consider the use of structured descriptions of Research Designs to support evaluation of inter...
متن کاملAutomatic Text Browsing Using Vector Space Model
Vast amounts of text are now available in machine-readable form and can be processed electronically. The vector space model of text processing has been widely used and has consistently produced superior retrieval results for the last thirty years. Traditionally , information retrieval research has concentrated on improving on-demand retrieval of useful textual information. Often a user has no p...
متن کاملBrowsing a Digital Library: A New Approach for the New Zealand Digital Library
Browsing is part of the information seeking process, used when information needs are ill-defined or unspecific. Browsing and searching are often interleaved during information seeking to accommodate changing awareness of information needs. Digital Libraries often support full-text search, but are not so helpful in supporting browsing. Described here is a novel browsing system created for the Gr...
متن کاملKeywords and RDF Fragments: Integrating Metadata and Full-Text Search in Beagle++
Full-text search engines and metadata repositories have so far investigated very different approaches to search, mainly due to their separate and different storage systems for information and data. As we have argued in previous papers, though, integrating full-text and metadata search capabilities is crucial for powerful semantic desktop search systems [3]. Semantic metadata is able to represen...
متن کاملBrowsing a Structured Multimedia Repository
Browsing large amounts of assorted multimedia poses several challenges on creating a supporting user interface. Even further, if metadata, structures and relations are defined on top of multimedia fragments, the complexity of a multimedia repository increases. However, this is also a path for exploiting new browsing mechanisms. This paper presents insights on which aspects should be available o...
